Celebrating Gospel Movement: Our 2018 Annual Ministry Report

“CRM / Novo is a band of creative missionaries sent to multiply movements of the gospel and mobilize the church for mission around the world.”

Every year we pause to take an account of what God has done through the efforts of our staff. Each of our missionaries takes time to record the stories and numbers of people impacted, share moments of breakthrough and answered prayer, and celebrate the goodness of our God and his Kingdom.

The Annual Ministry Report is a summary of all of these things.

While it may just look like numbers on a page, what these stories and details represent is something powerful and growing.

MAKE NEW: The Expanding Gospel Movement Among Youth in Cambodia

CRM / Novo is a band of creative missionaries; determined, innovative, and responsive to the Spirit. We are sent to multiply movements of the gospel and to mobilize the church for mission. In everything we do, our hearts look forward to the day when all will be made new. Novo, it means ‘to make new.’

One of the stories that exemplifies this vision to multiply movements in creative ways, featured in CRM / Novo’s introduction video (see below), is a gospel movement in Asia: In Cambodia, when our staff saw that children living on the street loved to worship, they started a worship school. Now these youth have become musicians and leaders, bringing hope to the places they call home.

CRM / Novo shared a special video about this worship movement on the streets of Cambodia in 2017, but the movement didn’t stop there. It has expanded to other cities and flowed into a new youth church plant, where some of these youth are leaders.

MAKE NEW: The Thief Who Brought His Neighborhood to Jesus

CRM / Novo is a band of creative missionaries; determined, innovative, and responsive to the Spirit. We are sent to multiply movements of the gospel and to mobilize the church for mission. In everything we do, our hearts look forward to the day when all will be made new. Novo, it means ‘to make new.’

One beautiful example shared in our CRM / Novo introduction video (see below) is from South Africa: a thief who turned to Jesus went door-to-door asking forgiveness. Now he’s mentoring young men in his township, making disciples among those he previously stole from.

Hope for Vulnerable Women at NEST Serbia: A CRM Special Project

What does it really mean to love your neighbor? Jesus’s command radically changes us from people focused on ourselves to people looking to help others, even those different from us.

In Serbia, our staff discovered just who their neighbors were: young moms entering into motherhood totally alone.

Where We Begin to Change the World: The Development of Love

It’s hard to put into words why I came to love Kolkata, the City of Joy. Its mayhem of movement and noise were overwhelming to my introvertedness, its poverty and need overwhelming to my sense of compassion and empathy, its emotionally honest and exuberant people overwhelming to my midwestern reserve. I don’t know why I loved it, but I did.

I think it had something to do with the community I found there. In the midst of heartbreaking and hopeless situations, I heard story after story of God’s people moved by compassion into the middle of the hardest places and worst neighborhoods. Their commitment inspired me. I wanted to become more like them. I wanted to take part in changing the pain of the world into joy.

I found a similar sense of kinship with the most well-known figure to have ever left home and country to serve God in that city, Mother Teresa.

Where We Begin to Change the World: The Love of God

I first arrived in Kolkata, India in the quiet hours of the early morning. The calm on the streets was strangely incongruent with the chaos that would follow; it was as if the deserted street had to catch its breath before the onslaught of another day.

Once the city awoke, overwhelm and sensory overload became my normative experience. Kolkata is a city bursting at the seams with people, movement, noises, and smells, all of which left my head spinning. In addition, everywhere I looked there were signs of need and poverty. By the end of my first week on this short exposure trip, I was questioning how any person wanting to catalyze change in this setting could hope to make even a small dent.

Where would one even begin?

Give to a CRM Special Project: Sunrise In-Home Hospice

“Sunrise is a light in the darkness. It seeks out those who have been rejected by society, and cares for them. It comforts and befriends them; tends to their health. It supports the education of their children, and brings them the good news of Jesus.”

This summer, we’ve begun introducing some of the practical ways CRM staff serve their communities around the world via social media. We believe that God cares for the material and social needs of a community—and that meeting these needs creates opportunities for the gospel to take root and the Spirit of God to bring transformation and redemption.

Each month we are featuring a different special project, and sharing a specific funding challenge to bless that project and ministry, and sow into God’s Kingdom in that context.

Moving With God: Deeper Than Optimism, Hope Is a Virtue

Poverty is in front of my face.
I cannot move it.

Every single day I wake up and I go to bed looking at poverty and misery.
And I suffer when I see how people suffer.

I feel so helpless to solve these problems.
I get angry that people don’t work to solve their own problems.
I lose my hope that things will ever be different.

But God answered me in my hopelessness and gave me a new understanding.
God said, “Jose, in this kind of ministry, you have to live out hope from virtue, not optimism.”

InnerCHANGE: Making Things New in 2018

We're launching into 2018 with a quick look at the possibilities in store for CRM’s various ministries. Here's a final post from our ministry collective leaders on what they're fired up about for the new year.

InnerCHANGE: Transformation Among the Poor

What is InnerCHANGE? InnerCHANGE is CRM's Christian order among the poor. Teams live and serve in marginalized neighborhoods around the world, seeking to live out the good news of Jesus in word and deed.

Our InnerCHANGE leaders summed up their hope for 2018 with one simple word, “new.”

Following the Light

It was our first true Christmas here, in the marginalized corners of Miami, and we were reaching for new traditions like a four-year old reaches for the star atop a tree. The year before this, our belongings, including Christmas stockings and chipped, hand-me-down decorations, had been neatly tucked away in storage while we had lived in someone else’s large and lizard infested farm-house. We did our best to celebrate joy coming down to the world but mostly it just felt like any other day.
